Top Ten Tips for Saying No Day 6: Take the opportunity to bring up things you need from them

Tip no 6: Take the opportunity to bring up a thing you need from them

One of the most universal, but tacit, laws of human interaction is that of reciprocation, Raj Persaud tells us. So if someone asks you for a favour it would be at least impolite of them not to do one for you in return.

The advice then is to keep a list of favours you need doing ready, to whip out when there is the slightest sign of a favour request coming your way. Survival in the modern office is increasingly  like gunfight at the OK Corral – the fastest on the draw walks away!

Think carefully about the favours you request: don’t waste your wishes! What would most help you further your career or acheive your career objectives? What does the other person have access to that you don’t but could could use? Be prepared!
