How to win any argument

I see that Lillian Lee & her team at Cornell University have carried out some useful research on how to win arguments. Their key findings seem to include:

  • Timing: the first person to reply has a better chance of changing the opinion of the original person;
  • Alternative terminology: you’re better to use different words than those originally used e.g. if the original person says “climate change” then you talk about “global warming”;
  • Calm language: this is better than swearing or aggressive terms;
  • Length: longer replies are more persuasive;
  • Evidence: using numbers and statistics to back up your argument is more convincing;
  • Linking: cross refer to quotes and outside sources rather than just using quotes within your reply;
  • Hedge your bets: hedges (such as “this could be the case“) are not weaker as you might expect but may actually make an argument easier to accept by softening the tone;
  • Know when to give up: after 4 or 5 back-and-forth posts there is very little chance of changing anyone’s mind.

How to Resign with Style

When leaving a job there’s a great temptation to get all the pent-up grievances off your chest and tell your employer, boss or soon-to-be-ex-colleagues just what you think of them.

If you’re leaving because you’ve won millions on the lottery then have a blast. But if you still have to continue your working career then you may be wise to resist the urge.

You never know where you may meet someone again in future or where a future employer checks out your CV and contacts your old employer. Leave with dignity.

Matt Potter has written a book about resignation speeches. I like his “Message in the Bottle” approach, using your resignation to effectively pitch for a new job. He says

Someone who works in a call centre or a car dealership, they need to think when you resign who do they want to “woo” in some way. They could CC in co-workers into the email or if they have clients they want to seem like the good one in the situation, they could leak it to them. I wouldn’t advise burning bridges but leaking to one or two people”

Live for Today. Tomorrow is not guranteed.

Here’s a story about a poor lady, Vivian, Archer, who tripped over her kitten and fractured some ribs which lead to her death.

Sounds like she had a lot of worries and her last days on earth were troubled. Well her troubles are suddenly over and so is any opportunity to be happy and carefree, to love, to laugh, to sing, to dance, to be silly, to tell someone she loved them.

Make the most of your life while you have it.

You can do more than you dream you can!

Not many people would take on a crocodile armed only with a wooden paddle. To save the life of her daughter Vankar did just that, and won!

In a life or death situation, when you HAVE to do something, you can do so much more than you could ever imagine.

Imagine how your life could change if you harnessed that amazing power within and used it to solve some problems in your life. So what is stopping you doing that?

The power of an act of kindness

It’s easy to feel small and powerless in a complicated, fast moving world. But everyone has the power to bring some happiness to others often with just the smallest act. Don’t underestimate the pleasure you bring to yourself when you do this!

Is there some small thing you could do today to put something positive into the world?

A phonecall, a smile, a flower, a treat, a compliment ….. try giving something for no other reason than a little happiness.

At least this little dog has good news!

I looked for positive & inspirational stuff in the news today and found very little.  Of course good and heroic things are happening all around us all the time but it doesn’t sell papers, I guess. If you’re feeling down – avoid the news!

However, here is one good news story: a little dog who was bitten by a snake and has made a recovery. It was touch & go for a while, but he pulled through.  If he can make it – so can you! If all seems lost – don’t give up!
