28 July 1914: 16 million people were about to die!

On this day 100 years ago the First World War began in which 16 million people were killed.

It all seems like just numbers now but their lives were as important to each of them as yours to you and mine to me.

These were mostly young men who mostly wanted to be at home with their families and not lying dead in a ditch. For each that died there were left grieving mothers, fathers, wives and children: lives shattered forever.

When you look at someone richer than you and envy them, remember to look at people whose lives were far worse than yours and who had no choice.

You are lucky to have life – be sure to make the very most of it!

How to win the lottery

I read an article about a man from Indianapolis who won $1million twice from 2 lottery tickets he bought in the space of 3 months.

What’s his secret?

I have no idea but one thing is sure, you need to start by buying a lottery ticket!

I have heard plenty of people complain they don’t get any lucky breaks but while they sit focussing on what they don’t have they forget to make the very most of all that they do have.

Do an audit of your life. Look again at all your assets, opportunities, abilities, contacts, skills, ideas, motivations. Are you sitting on a lottery ticket that you’re not cashing in?

Success: How can you stand out from the crowd?

How could you improve in your life by doing something to stand out from the crowd?

In the course of coaching and counselling I have heard many say that they have tried to get  something but have not succeeded through no fault of their own.

Dig deeper and maybe for example, they sent a CV or filled out an application form to get a job and that was it – they did what many others did and, like many others, they were over-looked and forgotten.

Look at success stories and very often you see people who have gone the extra mile, done something unusual, been that much more persistent.

Here’s a great story about a young man using a chocolate bar to promote himself. It has certainly got him noticed!

Step into your Moment!

I’m a big fan of Anthony Robbins. Here’s a quote I read from him that has stayed with me and I often think about if I’m tempted to feel sorry for myself:

Somebody is in the hospital begging God for the opportunity you have right now. Step into your moment.

A Lesson from Lewis Hamilton: Never Give Up!

Often the best motivational stories come from sport. Today from Lewis Hamilton, in Formula 1, we witnessed a real lesson in what happens if you don’t give up even when everything seems to be against you.

Earlier in this race weekend Lewis’ car caught fire and today he started the race from the pits, in the rain, at the back of the whole pack. In the first lap he spun and it looked like his race was over but he kept going. He drove a brilliant race and against all odds he finished the race third and ahead of his main championship rival (who had started the race at the very front).

It’s easy when things go against you to lose heart and not give it your all but Lewis didn’t and it paid off for him today, way above all expectations.

Lots of clichés and sayings express this sentiment but as Churchill (and Thomas the Tank Engine) said:

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER GIVE UP!

Could this attitude make a difference to your life?
